A librarian named Samantha

Heels by Megan Erickson

I was thrilled when Megan Erickson announced that Bryan – an important side character in her newsletter serial turned full blown book, Boots – was getting his own book. He is the ideal anti-hero, Bryan is not a good guy but he does what he does for good reasons. And when he meets small-town librarian Samantha, you know that things are going to get interesting.

I don’t want to say too much about the storyline of this book as I’m not a fan of spoiling people and this is a book that is best experienced without too much prior knowledge – except of course that which you gain by reading Boots (though of course this book can be read as a standalone). But I do want to talk about Samantha’s her characterisation was so authentic and I really connected with her inner critic. Sam has suffered from gaslighting in her past and this has resulted in her questioning everything about herself – from her display of emotions, her everyday choices and, most of all, her appearance. And while it was devastating to read about the consequences of such manipulation, I really felt that Megan did a fabulous job with such a realistic portrayal.

Heels was everything I wanted from Bryan’s story and a whole heap I didn’t expect but was so thrilled to get. There were jaw dropping moments, hot and panty-wetting sex scenes, past demons back with a vengeance and some twists I didn’t see coming. Plus a catch up with Tara and Lance from Boots, that I thoroughly enjoyed (and for those who have read Boots, the significance of the title of my review gets a mention!!) A definite five star read!!

The reluctant rockstar and the recovering addict

Riven by Roan Parrish

There are not a lot of books for me that I actually don’t want to keep reading because prolonging the ending means I get to spend a bit longer wrapped up in the world created by the author and I can pretend for a little while more that the characters are real and the story is actually something that happened. Riven by Roan Parrish is a book I really didn’t want to finish – and the fact I have devastates me and I know I’ll be doing a reread of this one again before Rend comes out in November.

“If you’re looking for a prize, you ain’t lookin’ for love. Love isn’t a reward. It’s not something you deserve or don’t deserve.”
“Oh, yeah, so what is it then?”
“Fuck if I know,” he said. “But I sure as hell know what it isn’t.”

Theo Decker is the lead singer of rock band Riven and he is amazing at what he does – but, deep down, it’s not what he truly wants. Stumbling around New York late one night, he finds Caleb Whitman singing in a bar and this chance meeting brings about a connection neither of them can deny. Caleb and Theo have their own inner demons to battle – especially Caleb as a recovering addict, 12 months out of his fourth stint at rehab and hoping to not have to go back. What makes these two so good together… well it’s not only the palatable chemistry, the way they feel so comfortable around each other or the incredible sexual connection … it’s what they are able to bring out in one another… HOPE!! Hope to return to music, hope to do what they want for once, hope for a real lasting relationship, hope to start over… and it’s this sense of hope that I truly connected with. I shed some real tears as I read this story because the way in which Roan writes makes Caleb and Theo so real that I couldn’t help but feel what they felt and fall in love with them as they fell in love with each other.

“The hope on his face nearly tore me apart. Because it was all for me. This man, standing in front of me, was dreaming a dream for me, and it was humbling as fuck.”

I wish I could better put into words why I loved this book so much! It’s not just a “rockstar romance”, it’s not just a “mm romance”, it’s not even just a “romance” novel…. it’s a book that will burrow deep into your soul and take you to a place where you, too, can truly believe anything is possible. Sometimes the right book falls into your lap at the right time, and Riven has been the book I needed for what is coming up in my own life right now… and I couldn’t be more grateful!!

Point me in the direction of a flannel-wearing, bearded hottie please!!

Lumbersexual by Leslie McAdam

Holy moly!! This book right here is one big slap in the face of why I needed to jump on the Leslie McAdam romance train way earlier than I have. I already love the first two books in her Love in Translation series (Sol & Sombra) and I was kicking myself that I hadn’t read her previous novels – and I’m so glad I made it a priority because boy, oh boy, she is one talented lady and I am hooked!!!

Lumbersexual has one interesting title, one hot as cover and a storyline that had me captivated from the prologue. Maggie Washington is spending the summer in Yosemite National Park while she decides what to do with the rest of her life. When she meets permanent Park ranger Court Thompson – whose reputation as the king of the summer fling precedes him – Maggie discovers that there is so much more to life than living by a plan.

I still consider myself a newbie to Leslie’s books and as such I’m only now realising that coupled with an incredible ability to write smoking hot, panty wetting sex scenes, she writes stories that have such fabulous life advice. And as a reader in my 30s, I love books that not only let me escape my real life for a little while, but also make me think about myself and how I live too – and Leslie’s books make me stop and think EVERY SINGLE TIME!! And I also have to mention that Leslie creates female leads that are realistic and authentic – and most of all, vary from your “typical” white, skinny, gorgeous heroine. Maggie, for instance, is a woman of colour, a woman who isn’t stick thin, a woman who is intellectual and isn’t afraid of it. And I can’t rave enough about how much I love this!!

Lumbersexual is a novella in length but definitely not substance. It’s a cleverly written, romantic tale of finding yourself and finding love – all over the course of one summer in Yosemite.

Sweet, sexy and a whole lot of fun

Playboy by Logan Chance

Logan Chance is one versatile author but I have to say I love his romantic comedies and Playboy is a perfect example of this. A best friends little sister trope with an accidental marriage thrown in and this is a book that will captivate you from the very first page. I loved Jonah the photographer and Chelsea the aspiring actress – they are so good together and their chemistry is hot, hot, hot.

Logan does a fantastic job of including a whole heap of movie quotes in Playboy and despite me not knowing them all, I loved this little quirk that made the story stand out. And knowing that this book is the start of a loosely connected series of standalone about her four guy friends – Jonah, Booker (from Heartbreaker which is out now and I read last year), Ethan (from Stuck which is coming June 2018) and Declan (whose book isn’t announced yet) – I’m totally thrilled because I’m always a fan of revisiting characters and seeing everyone get their happily ever after 😁

If you like your romances sweet, funny, sexy and a little dirty then Playboy is definitely a must read!!

When one item of shoe wear can conjure up an entire story!

Boots by Megan Erickson

“Funny how you think you have nothing to lose until you lose it all.”

Boots was my introduction to Megan Erickson and after what began as a free newsletter subscriber serial book, I knew I would be hooked and have to read more by this talented author. This story has a bit of everything – romance, suspense, violence, humour and a couple in Tara and Lance that will burrow in deep!!

I loved the connection these two shared almost straight away and add to that with their shared pasts and this story is so gripping you will devour it as quick as I did. It’s a quick read now that I can do so in one sitting and yet there were plenty of chapters where I remember being so frustrated with Megan because she left us newsletter subscribers on a massive cliffhanger.

If you love romantic suspense, if you love hot, panty-wetting sex scenes, if you love quick, captivating reads … then grab Boots.

A good reason to be cocky!!

Cocktales – A Romance Anthology

cocky-final (2).jpg

Firstly let me say that I absolutely, 100% support the reason these authors quickly put together this anthology and even if I didn’t know a single author who I contributed I would have bought this collection regardless. But I was lucky enough to know quite a few of the authors and so I’ve chosen to read and review their stories below (and hopefully get around to reading the other contributions at some stage as well).

Cock and Balls – Amy Daws

This story is pure perfection. I’m a die-hard fan of the Harris family and getting to see Indie and Cam’s secret wedding was so so so so good!! It was perfectly them and the little insights we got of the rest of the Harris family made this an absolutely highlight of the anthology. My only criticism (and this will be an recurring theme I’m sure) is that it wasn’t long enough lol
I will forever be a #HarrisHoAndProud

Fight or Flight – Meghan Quinn

Meghan Quinn has given us a little look into the fighter pilot world in which her upcoming duet is set and I could’ve be more thrilled. This was fabulous and I’m desperately hoping we get to see more of Stryder (because the books will be about Colby who we also met) as I have a feeling he has a very intriguing back story.

Until the Cock Crows – Sierra Simone

Sierra Simone does hot, erotic taboo like an absolute master!!! And this short story of a preacher and the woman who works alongside him at their Methodist Church is all kinds of steamy, sensual and downright sexy!! I love Corabel’s sass, I love Mark’s cockiness and I love these two together.

The Golden Sombrero – Kate Stewart

Yay! More Alice and Rafe and Ren and Erica 😁⚾️ I haven’t got around to reading Kate’s “Balls in Play” series but I met this motley crew in Kate’s contribution to the Team Player anthology last year. And as I’m always a fan of romance novels that include married couples – this story totally hit the mark. Flirting, seduction, a ridiculous baseball superstition about no sex and you have a recipe for an incredibly awesome story. Another winner!!!!

I fell in love with Emma and Tucker all over again

My Best Friend’s Ex by Meghan Quinn
Narrated in dual narration by Rudy Sanda and Amelie Griffin

The two leads in My Best Friends Ex – Emma Marks and Tucker Jamieson – will forever be one of my all time favourite couples and their story is one I will never get sick of. Hearing it in audio made me fall in love with them all over again and I know I’ll be doing a re-read or re-listen very soon!!

I really enjoyed the audio and despite it being dual narration, it’s definitely one I’d love to listen to again and again. Rudy Sanda was the ideal Tucker and I look forward to hearing him as a racer when I get around to listening to Twisted Twosome. His version of Emma was also really pleasant to listen to and I appreciated that as well. Amelie Griffin was a fabulous Emma and while her male voices weren’t outstanding, they weren’t irritating so I consider that a massive win.

I’d definitely recommend this as an audiobook and I don’t need to rave about the actual story because my love for it and these characters is pretty evident!!!

Touching, heartfelt, beautifully romantic

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish

It is books like this that just make my heart burst and make me so incredibly glad when I’ve found a new author whose books I just want to devour!! In the Middle of Somewhere was Roan Parrish’s debut novel and I swear you cannot tell. She is another one of those authors who just has incredible talent and a knack for telling beautiful stories.

I was blown away by the authenticity and realism of Daniel and Rex in this book. They are both beautiful men but with very sad pasts and a lot of things to work through. But together they complement each other and the chemistry between these two is hot hot hot 🔥 The sex scenes are sensual, steamy and absolutely beautiful and I love these two together. Furthermore, as the story is told entirely from Daniel’s perspective, we spend a lot of time in his head and I found myself feeling like the type of inner critic in Daniel’s head is one I could identify with. He struggles with the thought that everything will turn out ok and is a pessimist first … and I could identify with this so very much! Sure our backgrounds are polar opposites (let alone our gender and sexual orientation), but there was something about his inner voice that I just understood completely.

Roan is a phenomenal author and one I’m so very glad to have found. She writes absolutely beautiful mm romance stories that are so character driven and that I always manage to relate to. A definite one click forever author for me and I cannot wait to read her next release as well as her through her back catalogue as well.

Get ready for IMPACT!!!

Impact by Kate Sterritt

Well this book had everything I wanted after the jaw dropping cliffhanger ending of Collision (and yes you MUST read that book before Impact as they are a duet and you’ll be missing out on a lot of you don’t read it). Jules and Leo’s story is not without it’s fair share of drama, sex and more fighting (of the mainly physical kind!) and I was totally hooked until the very end.

So not to spoil this book or its predecessor I’ll just give a few – vague – dot points regarding the parts that stood out for me.

  • Leo’s past coming back was HUGE and so very unexpected. And when all the cards are dealt I think you’ll be as shocked as I was with how it all played out.
  • I’m going to be frank, the side plot with a certain guy that Jules met was just a whole lot of frustrating!!!!!
  • Perth!!! Wow – so much good stuff and so much shocking stuff that men and women will do in the pursuit of sport (the sauna 😳😳🤢🤢)
  • Jules continues to fight for what and who she believes in and I love her so much for that.
  • And Leo – he is my type of book boyfriend: hot, flawed and crazy in love with his Jules!!
  • That epilogue – ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!!! I loved it ❤️❤️

Overall this is one incredible duet that will keep you turning pages until the very end. Kate Sterritt is on my must read authors list for a reason and these books only cement that even further!!

Get set for one hell of a collision!

Collision by Kate Sterritt

I’ve had Collision – the first book in Kate Sterritt’s Fight for Life series – on my Kindle for ages and I felt like it was time to dive into something different. And this story, it had me hooked from the first page, captivated by the two incredible lead characters Juliette/Jules and Leo, and left my jaw hitting the floor with a cliffhanger I’m so desperately glad I get to read the resolution of straight away!!

Kate has a way of creating characters that are genuine and authentic, with faults and positive traits, with things you love and hate about them … and Collision is a perfect example of this. Jules and Leo are drawn to one another from the moment they lock eyes across a crowded room (ok, fight club arena but same same 😉) and when fate has them crossing paths three times in almost as many days, it appears that these two might just be what the other needs. But there’s a lot of obstacles standing in their way, Juliette’s boyfriend and family for one – couple that with Leo having some pretty massive demons in his past that he has yet to deal with, and despite the palpable chemistry and energy between these two, it’s going to be an uphill struggle for them to create a healthy relationship.

Kate leaves us with an absolutely jaw dropping cliffhanger which I did not see coming. So I’m heading back to my Kindle to read Impact and see how all of this is going to play out…
